women

So I'm at the start of writing a major essay (8000 words) for university. My title is 'Self and Gender: Feminism, the Self-Portrait and its Importance within Contemporary Art and Photography'.

I got many books from the library all full of wonderful female photographers.

I wanted to post what I think are some of the most interesting women photographers, for you to see and hopefully be inspired by!

Alice Austen 'Trude & I Masked, Short Skirts' (1891)

Ana Casas Broda 'Self Portrait' - From 'Album' (1989-91)

Berenice Abbott 'Self Portrait with Beret' (1948)

Imogen Cunningham 'Self Portrait' (1958)

Toni Fressell 'Weeki Wachi Spring, Florida' (1947)

Vivian Maier 'Self Portrait' (1956)

Anne W.Brigman 'The Spirit of Photography' (1905)

Francesca Woodman 'Space², Providence, Rhode Island' (1975-1978)

There are hundreds more inspirational women photographers that would take me years to get through...

i miss college and sarah sparks

This is a bit of an oldie, a final piece for my college exhibition in 2008.

I was just thinking about the college days and how much I really miss them, although I am still studying Photography now at university, its not quite the same as college.

The main reason I think is my college tutor Sarah Sparks, she's probably one of the best and most inspiring Photography tutors there is. I don't think I'll meet any other tutors like her.

She always told you what she really thought and kept on pushing you to bring out the best work you could possibly produce. With a bit of acting silly and time out for gossip on the side.

Anyone studying under Sarah best realise how lucky they are.

And congratulations on your upcoming winter wedding!

sneak peak - noir

So this is the first project from uni that I have enjoyed and properly gotten into, the project is simply 'studio portrait'.
And after watching The Big Sleep I wanted to do a film noir shoot, so here are a couple of shots.
I'm currently still printing in the darkroom and editing down to my final image.
These are scans from the negatives, developed by myself at home.

lily

I've never really took photos like this before, I find taking photos of flowers lame and amatuer-ish, but for a project for uni I need to photograph 'fascinating objects' and so I photographed a lot of random things. These were taken on my Zenit E with a 29mm lens, on Ilford b&w film. The 2nd one is of the middle of the lily, using a macro attachment thingy. I do actually like the outcome of the 1st photo, it couldnt have looked any better if it wasnt shot on film.

...........

I recently got some more Fuji colour film but realised I had 2 shots of black and white Polaroid left in my 450 land camera so I used them up.

I've really been slacking lately and I hate myself for it, I've let other things get in the way that just really arent inportant to me at all.

I'm going to sort myself out as I start uni in just over a months time, I really cant wait!

This is my new favourite corner, it has most things I need (minus all my cameras).
Scanner, sewing machine, polaroids, Francesca Woodman & Nan Goldin books :)

bloody px

I've been having a bit of a hard time with the First Flush PX 600, my first batch was spot on, almost perfect. But my next pack just isnt working as well, I think it has a lot to do with the heat, the weather recently has been a bit warm and mental and it looks as though its had a bit of an effect on my bloody px film!
Hopefully I'll have better look with my next pack.
These are the few I really salvaged from the pack!

stand alone

I very rarely take those one of a kind photographs where it actually takes my own breath away, but I have to say, this is one of them.

Experimenting with the new PX 600 Film, I love this image.
You need to see the real thing to enjoy all its beauty.

she's dead, wrapped in plastic

When I was at college I feel like I was maybe a bit more creative and probably enjoyed more creepy and sinister shoots. Like these few images I've posted. Some were for projects but most just for fun/for myself.
I miss it, and look forward to a lot more creative shoots in the future, I just need some willing models :)
(The first 3 are self-portraits)

PX 600 Silver Shade

So, I havent posted in a little while because I got a new (shit) job and have been working my butt off. But I recieved an amazing treat through the post... New Polaroid PX 600 film.
So after work one night last week I went to the beach to try out one shot, I taped the box the film came in onto the front of the camera where it shoots out the film so it wasnt exposed to any light, left it for 2 minutes to develop and heres what I got....

I'm pretty pleased with my first ever shot! Cant wait to go somewhere and take more, I'm not wasting any, as you only get 8 exposures!!!

it's coming back to me

My motivation, that is.

I got slightly worried the other week because I just wasnt taking photo's anymore, even though I sit and do nothing all day I wasnt making time to take photo's. So I made an effort and am pissed off at myself that I stopped for a couple of weeks.
Hopefully it will come to me naturally like it used to, from now on.

border or no border?

Today I got out my Polaroid 450 which has been sitting in a box under my bed for months! Still had some black and white 667 film in it. It's expired and it smells so bad!!!
I've never scanned any of my peel-aparts with the paper border still on, so I thought I'd give it a go and see if I liked the outcome. I think it works for some and not for others...
